Gloucester is a county, not a city, so permits and inspections run through the Gloucester County building office rather than any city department. It also sits on the Middle Peninsula, north of the York River, which makes it the furthest reach of our service area and the one with the most distinctive access problem.
That problem is the Coleman Bridge. The double swing bridge carrying Route 17 between Gloucester Point and Yorktown is the only public crossing of the York River. It holds openings during weekday peaks, from 5 to 8 in the morning and 3 to 7 in the afternoon, but outside those windows it opens on signal and a crossing stops traffic. There is no alternate route that does not add a very long detour. We schedule cabinet delivery around that deliberately, and we stage a full load on site rather than running repeat trips across it.
Rural lots make that staging easy, which is a real advantage here. Outside Gloucester Court House and Gloucester Point, private well and septic are common, and both drive design decisions: harder well water scales new fixtures faster than public supply, and a septic system is an argument for a smaller disposal or none. The older homes around the Court House historic area bring plaster and settled floors; the newer construction spread across the county is ordinary and predictable. From our Norfolk shop it is about an hour and fifteen minutes, so Gloucester visits are batched into scheduled days rather than promised same-day.
